Emilio and Bruno Salmonella opened their meat packing plant on Chicago’s south side in 1882. Following an outbreak of food poisoning in the early 20th century, the public’s attention was directed at the unfortunately named brothers and their meats as being the source of the infection. Nearing bankruptcy, the brothers considered changing their family name, until the “Great Meat Shortage” of 1919 saw them once again return as Chicago’s finest supplier of quality meats. |
